I led the team that created a true enterprise data strategy based on the airlines employee experience needs. We focused on data consumers rather than data sources because not all data is equally important. Some data is used more frequently by more systems. We used this insight to:
Review all major current systems and new business requirements, asking what kinds of data are needed for each (e.g., employee profile, current training status, rewards and recognitions balance).
Build a quantitative analysis of consumption needs, identifying the moments that matter for the employee experience and relevant data needs across those moments.
Assemble a business-oriented view of the data products that would meet these needs, prioritized by demand, and make these the foundation of our enterprise data capability.
I demonstrated that a few data products could replace hundreds of current and future data integrations, establish a near-real-time data backbone, speed up the implementation of new employee experiences and operational system changes by months or years, and save millions in IT costs.
This data strategy, which included a cloud-based "data factory" architecture, has been implemented, and initial data products are now in production. Even more valuable is the shared understanding and use of data across the airline, including flight, customer, employee, aircraft, and their intersection points.
